The Artistic Edge

7 Skills Children Need to Succeed in an Increasingly Right Brain World

This book explores why leadership skills taught through the arts are what young people need most to be successful in life. Competition for jobs is fierce and global and the current state of the world requires an ability to constantly adapt to change. Is the coming generation ready to face the realities of life after school? Education in the arts should not be reserved for the talented few, but promoted as the means for all children to develop skills in: creative thinking, confidence, problem-solving, accountability, relationship building, communication, adaptability and dreaming big. Lisa’s book explores how to give children a competitive edge by giving them an artistic one!
Foreword written by Raymond Aaron, New York Times bestselling author of Chicken Soup for the Parent’s Soul.

This wonderful, intelligent, highly readable book is a persuasive and passionate explanation of precisely why experiences in the arts should be an essential part of every child’s education. It’s strongly recommended for parents and professionals who prepare young people for success in life.

Thank you for writing this book, Lisa. You’re talking about something that should be shouted from the tops of all of our ivory towers. DAREarts has been following these principals for 17 years now: Discipline, Action, Respect, and Excellence in Education. We’ve been teaching kids that they are Leaders through the arts. Through our programs, they experience a sampling of All the arts – from an introduction to violin to a beginner’s class at the National Ballet School, to a pottery class to culinary arts, to writing songs…it goes on. Then, in some of the most dangerous neighbourhoods in our cities, those leaders stand up and perform for their communities. Their growth and confidence is astounding. It’s a terrible shame that the arts are being shaved back in our schools. The need is great. The results are proven. ARTS CREATE LEADERS!!!

The funny thing about all this math, science, reading, et. all versus art is that art is math, science and much, much more. Very few organizations have spaces to accomodate doing art. I have been in basements, of course no such thing as air conditioning, space for storage. Art is usually done in the most dire space, but the colors of the rainbow begin to bounce off the walls. Art has made my life what it is, boundless imagination.
